The NFL preseason is officially underway, and most people are now shifting their attention (if they haven’t already) from fantasy baseball to football. If you are still reading this fantasy baseball article in August, then I applaud you because you are probably in the top of your standings or a very dedicated fantasy player (or likely both). As usual you’ll find some of my favorite fantasy baseball picks for today in an entire lineup format, so feel free to use some, none, or all of the players below, and hopefully this piece will help you to win some cash from your lineup today.
Jeff Samardzija ($8,000) — home vs. MIN (Trevor May)
Samardzija is exactly the kind of pitcher you want in FanDuel – he goes deep into games, strikes out a good amount of batters, and won’t cost you a fortune. He has averaged 7.1 IP and 5 Ks since he’s been with Oakland and is just the 9th most expensive starter today. He also gets to face a weak Twins offesnse and is opposing a rookie with a career 3.94 ERA in the minors.
Russell Martin ($3,500) — home vs. SDP (Eric Stults)
Martin has been a force in August, and is sporting an awesome .500 OBP on the month. He also gets to face Eric Stults who is tied for the major league lead in losses this year, so this should be a great game for Martin.
Ryan Howard ($3,200) — home vs. NYM (Dillon Gee)
Even if he was hitting worse than Bartolo Colon, I’ll start anybody who has these kinds of splits against his opposing starter. In 20 career at bats against Dillon Gee, Howard has recorded 9 hits (.450 AVG) with 6 home runs and 14 RBI (1.400 SLG!). Talk about having a pitcher’s number!
Robinson Cano ($3,900) — home vs. CWS (Hector Noesi)
Few batters have been hitting better than Cano has lately, and his 1.495 OPS in August is tops in baseball for the month. He also gets to face the super-hittable Hector Noesi today so this slugger should just keep on sluggin’.
Todd Frazier ($3,100) — home vs. MIA (Brad Penny)
Brad Penny hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2012, and owns a 5.41 ERA over his previous two major league seasons. Right now I would advise starting any Red’s hitters today against Penny, especially Frazier who is batting .363 in August and has a price tag at a great value.
Yunel Escobar ($2,300) — road vs. CHC (Edwin Jackson)
For someone who is hitting over .300 this month, Escobar is priced extraordinarily well and also has the pleasure of facing the batting practice pitcher also known as Edwin Jackson today.
Jose Bautista ($4,500) — home vs. DET (Max Scherzer)
17 is the magic number for Bautista, who is always a threat to go yard no matter the circumstance. He has now reached base in 17 straight games, and has also come to the plate 17 times against Max Scherzer who he is slashing an incredible .571/.647/.1.071 against in his career.
Gregory Polanco ($3,600) — home vs. SDP (Eric Stults)
After a pretty miserable July, Polanco is finally starting to break out of that slump and is hitting .407 this month with only one strikeout across the eight game span. He also gets to face Eric Stults who we’ve already established is pretty bad, so let the good times roll for this Pittsburg rookie.
Charlie Blackmon ($2,900) — road vs. ARI (Trevor Cahill)
While Blackmon is having a rough start to August, July was one of his best months yet so he hasn’t been as bad as people think. He’s also in the ideal situation to succeed today – Blackmon gets to face the right handed Trevor Cahill (Blackmon has a .813 OPS vs RHP this year) who is allowing a .946 OPS to lefties this year (which is the side Blackmon bats from).
