YUCK! Arguably the most hated player in baseball taking A-Roid out of the equation, is who I will be discussing in this article on a beautiful 4th of July.
Ryan Braun- the double doper, cheater, and most importantly, liar, is someone I need to give a sale pitch for. I want it noted I don’t like him any more than you guys. But we have to acknowledge that he is arguably having one of the most underrated seasons of any OFers in fantasy baseball. Braun is on an 84R, 20HR, 91RBI, 15SB, .293AVG pace this year-- in only 503 ABs. I don’t think he will be the 30-30 threat we were accustomed too, but those are some damn good numbers with 5 categories being impacted. The one real threat to Braun’s worth is his injury proneness in the last two seasons. Thumb and oblique injuries notably, but, as an owner and with the number of injuries this year, why not take the risk?
Another positive note on Braun, is his lineup and the position he hits in that lineup. Batting second is an ideal fantasy position. He will be able to drive in runs with a leadoff man ahead of him, get several ABs batting early on in the order, and be driven in a lot by guys like Gomez, Lucroy, Davis. Milwaukee has a tough lineup that has and will continue to score runs in 2014.
I want to share a trade I just was involved in, and express that the lineup/ballpark are INCREDIBLY important to a fantasy players worth, which helped impact my decision to gain Braun as my #1 OFer. I dealt Freeman, Altuve, Kemp, Melancon for Prado, V. Martinez, and Braun. I had several people tell me I ‘lost’ the trade. I very may well have. But Victor Martinez is batting behind Miguel Cabrera, and in front of T. Hunter/ J.D. Martinez which means R/RBI opportunities should continue. I already discussed Braun. Prado is in a weaker lineup, but still bats 2nd a lot in front of Goldschmidt. Now onto the hottest player in baseball, Jose Altuve. It is interesting how much people now love Altuve. I think he is OUTSTANDING, but is only a two category player. He is on pace for 80R, 4 HR, 48RBI... but with 69 SB and .345 AVG. I think he is great, but Prado is on a 66R, 6HR, 63 RBI pace with batting a slumping .268 AVG. Why do people make Altuve out to be a BEAST, and leave James Jones in their free agent pool? Jones is on pace for over 100R+ while batting near .300 and swiping 50 bases through 600 ABs. Granted he doesn’t have 2B eligibility, but he isn’t too far off from Altuve. My long winded point, is to not overpay for players on garbage teams as they don’t contribute to your RBI and R totals like you want them too. Freeman is on pace for only 83 RBI, as the Braves offense is atrocious with BJ Upton and Andrelton Simmons batting early in the lineup far too often.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions on trades or offers on twitter or here, as I will give my advice and what I would do. Hope everyone has a great Independence day.
