With two league drafts already under my belt for this year, here are five random thoughts:
2. Most experts will tell you to wait until the last two rounds to take your defense. I used to think that way but years of picking a mid-range defenses and then playing the waiver wire every week to find the right matchup has turned me around on this topic. In the Fantasy Ball Blogger Legends League I broke the seal on defense and took Seattle with my 12th round pick. I don’t regret it at all. While other owners are hunting down the best matchups on the waiver wire each week I will be using the Ron Popeil defense strategy….”Set it and Forget it.” Besides, my choice at that point in the draft was the number one rated defense or the 45th rated running back. To me it was a no-brainer.
3. Thanks to Ball Blogger Manny Medeiros aka Kreskin, the word is out on Ladarius Green. His ADP is moving up and you can no longer expect to snag him at the end of the draft. He is a freakish athlete and is poised to be Philip Rivers’s top TE target over Antonio Gates.
4. Rob Gronkowski still has an overall ADP of 3.05 in standard leagues but I suspect that position will move up as we get closer to the end of August. Despite all the talk about Jimmy Graham, I still believe Gronk is the top fantasy TE. The Patriots provided the blueprint on how to stop Graham last year when the put their best cornerback, Aqib Talib, on him and he was completely shut down and gave no indication he even wanted to fight for position. Even the most physical corner will not be able to shut down Gronk. If you want Gronk this year I think you will need to take him in the 2nd round.
5. While the real-life NFL is now dominated by the passing game, I think the running back position is still the key to winning your league championship. I think the best early round draft strategy in standard flex leagues this year is to make 3 out of your first 4 picks be a running back. Having three strong running backs puts you at a distinct advantage each week as running backs are always more consistent than wide receivers. Look to load up on wide receiver starting in the 5th round when 2nd tier options such as Michael Floyd, Percy Harvin, Roddy White, and Wes Welker are still available.
